Author Vijay Govindarajan said, ‘India has been inspiring the world with many innovative initiatives in the recent past including affordable healthcare. Bangalore headquartered hospital chain Narayana Health is a great example in offering affordable solution, with results that were impressive to Western observers. In doing so, Dr. Devi Shetty fulfilled his high-minded purpose and also built a very profitable company. From the beginning, even the most expensive surgical at Narayana hospitals were priced 20%-40% less than the same offerings at any other private Indian hospitals. He did not do this by cutting cost but by being an innovator; he simply did it by stepping over traditional boundaries and painting outside the lines.

One prominent and successful case is Health City Cayman Islands. Ascension (the nation’s largest non-profit health system and the largest Catholic health system in the world) in their quest to bring innovative, high-quality, low-cost tertiary healthcare services to the Cayman Islands partnered with Narayana Health and the Cayman government in 2012. The result was Health City Cayman Islands (HCCI), a 104-bed tertiary care hospital on Grand Cayman. After working closely for nearly four years with leaders from Narayana and the government in an innovative public-private partnership to build the strengths and capabilities of HCCI, the hospital is now achieving its vision. ’ added Author Ravi Ramamurti.

The book reveals four pathways being used by health-care organizations in the United States to apply Indian-style principles to attack the exorbitant costs, uneven quality, and incomplete access to health care. With rich stories and detailed accounts of medical professionals who are putting these ideas into practice, this book shows how value-based delivery can be made to work in the United States. It elaborates “bottom-up” change doesn’t require a grand plan out of Washington DC, agreement between entrenched political parties, or coordination among all players in the health-care system. It needs entrepreneurs with innovative ideas about delivering value to patients. Reverse innovation has worked in other industries. We need it now in health care.

Mr. Ajay G. Piramal, Chairman, Piramal Group with Shri Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog announces partnership to ‘Transform Aspirational Districts’ Across India

Bengaluru: 20.03.2018 – Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision for a holistic approach to balanced development across the country, through effective implementation of government schemes in the Aspirational Districts, is expected to lead to an overall improvement in the Human Development Index.  For this, it is imperative that all section of society come together and development in these districts turns into a mass movement.

Towards this, Niti Aayog and Piramal Foundation today entered into a Statement of Intent (SoI) to work closely with the District Collectors and Key officers to support the “Transformation of Aspirational Districts”.

Earlier this year, NITI Aayog ranked 115 Aspirational Districts selected by the Government on 6 socio-economic parameters, pertaining to Health & Nutrition, Education, Financial Inclusion and Skill Development, Agriculture and Water Resources and Basic infrastructure. NITI Aayog has highlighted multiple challenges across indicators that need to be disentangled, in order to transform these aspirational districts across states in India.

As per NITI Aayog CEO, Shri. Amitabh Kant, “All of us are committed to working towards Prime Minister, Shri Modi’s vision to streamline the efficacy of government schemes in the most backward districts of the country. For this, the aim is to create a unified team between districts, states and the center to ensure that these aspirational districts lift themselves up in all parameters. It is believed that Public-Private Partnerships, aided by technology, can bring radical transformation in the country, boosting implementation of various government schemes. NITI Aayog is delighted to partner with Piramal Foundation to implement this initiative across states.”

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ajay G. Piramal, Chairman, Piramal Group, said, “We have always believed that Innovation comes with an element of risk – and that is where the private sector can assist the government to absorb such challenges. Social impact at scale necessitates seamless Public-Private Partnerships. Piramal Foundation is delighted to partner with NITI Aayog towards supporting Prime Minister Shri Modi’s mission in these aspirational districts.”

Under the SoI with NITI Aayog, Piramal Foundation will work in close conjunction with the district administration, State Prabhari Officers, Central Prabhari Officers, state government and concerned Central ministries in improving the identified indicators by strengthening the existing public systems specifically in the health & nutrition and education sectors. Piramal Foundation will provide support by focusing on leadership development, change management, technology integration and implementing various innovative practices. The collaboration is for duration of 4 years, with the option to continue, based on mutual agreement.

NITI Aayog is anchoring the programme for transformation of districts:

One of the core strategy envisaged in the programme for transformation of aspirational district is to ensure convergence of efforts of State and Central government so that District magistrates and his/her team get necessary support. While different sectoral Ministries are partnering with States to bring change, the programme is anchored with Niti Aayog.

JMG News

Hailing from Arulnatham a village in Denkanikottai of Tamil Nadu, Shaktivel had a normal childhood. However, two years ago while playing; lime powder accidentally fell into his right eye causing irritation. As access to medical facility was limited, the boy’s family administered him with home remedy. Though the irritation subsided he started developing stickiness and difficulty in closing and opening his eyes.  His vision was also blurring. Owing to the socio-economic conditions, the family did not pursue any further treatment.

The 2 year long agony of being partially blind came to an end for 7 year old Shaktivel as his vision has been restored after a successful eye surgery at Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital. The eye sight was revived by performing conjunctival limbal stem cell transplant. The conjuctival limbal stem cell was harvested from Shaktivel’s father.
